Skuespilleren Chloé Zhao: En biografi

Tidlige liv og uddannelse

Chloé Zhao, også kendt som Zhao Ting, blev født den 31. marts 1982 i Beijing, Kina. Hun blev opdraget i en kreativ familie, da hendes far, Yuji Zhao, var en succesfuld forretningsmand og hendes stedmor, Song DanDan, var en kendt kinesisk skuespillerinde. Zhao var tiltrukket af vestlig popkultur og var ikke bange for at gå imod strømmen. Efter at have gået på en kostskole i London, flyttede hun til Los Angeles for at afslutte sin gymnasieuddannelse.

Efter gymnasiet studerede Chloé Zhao politisk videnskab på Mount Holyoke College, hvor hun fik en bachelorgrad. Efter endt uddannelse arbejdede hun i forskellige jobs som festarrangør, inden for ejendomsmægling og som bartender. Det var dog inden for filmverdenen, hendes sande passion lå, så hun besluttede sig for at studere filmproduktion på New York Universitys Tisch School of the Arts.

Tidlig karriere og første film

I 2010 vandt Zhao opmærksomhed og anerkendelse for sin kortfilm Daughters, som blev vist på Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, hvor den vandt prisen for Bedste Studerendes Live Action Kortfilm. Hendes første spillefilm var Songs My Brothers Taught Me fra 2015, der blev optaget på Pine Ridge Indian Reservation i South Dakota. Filmen handler om forholdet mellem en Lakota Sioux-bror og hans yngre søster. Filmen blev vist både på Sundance Film Festival og Cannes Film Festival, og den blev nomineret til Bedste Debut ved Independent Spirit Awards.

Gennembrud med The Rider og anerkendelse

I 2017 instruerede Chloé Zhao The Rider, en moderne western-drama, der følger en ung cowboy på en rejse for at finde sig selv efter en nærdødsulykke, der satte en stopper for hans professionelle ridderkarriere. Filmen blev optaget med ikke-professionelle skuespillere, der boede på ranchen, hvor filmen blev optaget. Inspirationen til at lave filmen kom, da cowboyen Brady Jandreau, som hun havde mødt under optagelserne til sin første film, led af en alvorlig hovedskade efter at være blevet kastet af sin hest under en rodeokonkurrence. Jandreau spillede senere sig selv i filmen som Brady Blackburn.

The Rider blev vist på Cannes Film Festival og modtog Art Cinema Award. Filmen blev rost af kritikere og indbragte Zhao nomineringer til Bedste Film og Bedste Instruktør ved Independent Spirit Awards. Ved samme ceremoni blev hun den første modtager af Bonnie Award, der anerkender en kvindelig instruktør midt i sin karriere. The Rider blev udgivet af Sony Pictures Classics i april 2018 og blev rost af anmeldere.

Fremtidige projekter

I april 2018 blev det annonceret, at Amazon Studios havde godkendt Zhaos kommende filmprojekt, der omhandler en historisk western om den første sorte U.S. Deputy Marshal ved navn Bass Reeves. Zhao skal både instruere filmen og skrive manuskriptet. Senere samme år blev det offentliggjort, at Marvel Studios havde ansat Zhao til at instruere en film baseret på The Eternals.
