Tidlige liv og uddannelse

Mahershala Ali blev født den 16. februar 1974 i Oakland, Californien som Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore. Han blev opvokset i Hayward og tog en bachelorgrad i massemedier på St. Marys College. Senere gjorde han sin professionelle debut som skuespiller ved California Shakespeare Festival i Orinda, Californien.

Efter sin debut fortsatte Ali sin uddannelse og fik en mastergrad i skuespil fra New York Universitys The Tisch School of the Arts i 2000.

Karriere

Mahershala Ali er kendt for sin ekstraordinært diverse talent og brede erfaring inden for film, tv og teater. Han har optrådt i flere velkendte film, herunder Derek Cianfrances The Place Beyond the Pines, Wayne Kramers Crossing Over, John Sayles Go For Sisters og David Finchers The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Ali har også haft en lang række optrædener på tv-skærmen og spillet blandt andet i Netflix-serien House of Cards og Marvel-serien Luke Cage. Han er også kendt for sin rolle i The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 og Gary Ross borgerkrigsdrama The Free State of Jones.

Teaterarbejde

Udover sit arbejde i film og tv har Mahershala Ali også en passion for teater. Han har medvirket i flere teaterproduktioner, herunder Blues for an Alabama Sky, The School for Scandal, A Lie of the Mind, A Dolls House, Monkey in the Middle, The Merchant of Venice, The New Place og Secret Injury, Secret Revenge.

Ali har også optrådt i en række teaterproduktioner uden for New York, herunder i Washington, D.C. på Arena Stage i titelrollen i The Great White Hope samt i The Long Walk og Jack and Jill.

I 2016 debuterede Ali på Broadway i Kenny Leons Smart People.

Anerkendelse og priser

Mahershala Ali har modtaget stor anerkendelse for sit talent og har fået flere priser og nomineringer. Han blev nomineret til en NAACP-pris for bedste skuespiller for sin rolle i Lifetimes The Wronged Man. Han har også modtaget kritikerros for sin rolle i Netflix-serien House of Cards.

Personligt liv

Mahershala Ali blev gift med Amatus Karim Ali den 27. juni 2013, og parret har en datter sammen ved navn Bari Najma Ali.

Ali er også kendt for sit dybe og fængende stemme og bliver ofte kaldt Mahershala som et kælenavn.

• Navnet Mahershalalhashbaz stammer fra Hebræerbogen (kapitel 8, vers 3) i den hebraiske bibel. Det er det længste korrekte navn (Gud påbød det at blive givet til profetens nyfødte søn) der forekommer i biblen og er faktisk en kombination af fire ord: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, hvilket betyder Skynd jer til byttet! eller Han har skyndt sig til plyndringen!
